Upcoming Events

The original plan was to have greeted you with a book review sometime in the previous week. However I'm still trying to find a way to accommodate time for all my current projects as well as getting a schedule for updates to this blog in order. But enough excuses...

I'm a big fan of the community concept when it comes to my nerdy interests. For example with video games I love going to tournaments even if I don't compete. I just like the idea of bringing people with similar interests together to have fun. So, I thought it would be a good idea to post a list of a few upcoming events that I will more than likely be attending.

On Friday February 26th, 2010 the creators of Penny Arcade will be in Los Angeles promoting their upcoming book "The Splendid Magic of Penny Arcade: The 11 1/2 Anniversary Edition". They will be at Meltdown Comics on Sunset Blvd. You can see the adress here as well as the other locations they will be visiting. So far it seems like its going to be your standard book signing, you'll show up, buy the product, have them sign it and be on your way. No matter how it turns out this is definately one event i'll be showing up to. This will be taking place at 7pm.

The next day Hi De Ho Comics & Books with Pictures will be having their own artist meet and greet. Artist William Stout will be there to sign merchandise. Now, im not really familiar with his work but from what i've seen its really cool stuff. The reason I mention this event is because this is the second time within the last month that Hi De Ho has had an artist signing and from the looks of it they're going to be turning this into a regular thing. You can find out more info on the event aswell as location on their facebook page here. The event will take place at 2pm but I don't think ill be able to make it to this one.

As if there weren't enough art events going on this day the guys over at Gallery Nucleus will be having another opening night. This time the gallery will feature art based off of Lewis Carroll's clasic book 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'. The event will take place from 7pm to 11pm. Click here for more info including the names of each of the artists that will be contributing. If this turns out anything like their last event, you don't want to miss it. I know I wont.

It just gets better and better. Especially for my gamer friends out there. February 27th will be the first tournament hosted by Level Up. Now, just because its a new tournament you shouldnt be scared after all the brains behind this operation is legendary Street Fighter player; Alex Valle. You can learn more about the tournament here. Just remember this event will take all day. From 9am to 11pm.

EDIT: This post has been edited for two reasons. The first is that the date for the Penny Arcade signing was wrong. So its been edited to reflect that.

Secondly; on Wednesday the 24th Meltdown comics will be hosting a launch party for Pop Gun volume 4. I've been to plenty of release parties for video games but never been to one for a comic book so I cant wait to check this one out. You can find out more about the event here.

Edit 2: As if Saturday wasn't already packed. Meltdown comics announced earlier today that Night of the Nick-Nacks art premier will be this Saturday. This one will be art inspired by the movie Return to Oz and the books by L. Frank Baum. I'm a huge fan of the Oz books as well as both movies so this is something I'm going to have to check out.

Quick thoughts on Zombies in Love

On Saturday I went to the opening of the Zombies in Love exhibit at the Gallery Nucleus and I must say I was blown away. I've wanted to check out the exhibit since I first heard about it because the concept itself is pretty cool and besides... who doesn't love zombies?

I have to start off by saying that the art will not disappoint. I can honestly say that I enjoyed every piece in the exhibit. Everything from Tim Gore's life-like silicone pieces to Anna Chambers baby zombie plushies. Although you can check out all the pieces on their website, here, I highly recommend you see them in person.

The organizers of the opening events did a great job because the gallery itself was pretty packed. For example, there was a zombie walk to the gallery and anyone who participated got to get in for free. After the exhibit started they set up an area in the back for shooting zombies. For $5 you got to rent a airsoft gun and shoot at lie actors dressed as zombies. If that wasn't enough there were plenty of free givveaways and Chris Lane was there to sign copies of his book, "Zombies: A Record of the Year of Infection".
